NOTICE TO MEMBERS AND COMMUNITY Arts Denman Annual General Meeting (AGM) Thursday, May 15 All members are warmly encouraged to attend. Call for a New Chair for Arts Denman Denman Island’s arts community is vibrant, diverse, and deeply rooted in volunteer spirit. From music to literature, from dance to fibre arts, our island overflows with creative energy that enriches all of us, residents and visitors alike. At the centre of this thriving cultural life stands Arts Denman, a volunteer-driven nonprofit that for decades has fostered artistic expression, connected artists with audiences, and nurtured the cultural fabric of our community.
Founded in 1985 as the Denman Island Arts & Crafts Society, Arts Denman has been a steadfast champion of creativity on Denman Island. Its mission, to foster the development of cultural activities and facilities, provide gallery and performance spaces, and advance arts education, is reflected in the astounding range of organisations and initiatives that now make up the Arts Denman family. Together these groups showcase the breadth of artistic life here:
The Arts Centre: a hub for gallery exhibitions and special arts events that nurture visual creativity. • Audio Arts Collective: staging open mic nights and performance opportunities for musicians and writers. • Baroque Festival: bringing the timeless beauty of baroque music into island life. • Concerts Denman: curating musical performances that resonate in our hearts and halls. • Creative Threads Conspiracy: convening makers, weavers, and fibre artists for shared creativity. • Inner Island Dance Collective: celebrating movement and dance as a form of shared expression. • Readers and Writers Festival: bringing writers and readers together for conversation and inspiration. • Summer Art Gallery: providing island artists with exhibition opportunities each summer. • Theatre Denman: supporting theatrical arts that animate community spaces.
These organisations, each with its own identity, mission, and loyal community, flourish under the umbrella of Arts Denman’s support, coordination, and shared vision for arts on the island. At the heart of this collaborative network is leadership grounded in community, generosity, and service. For many years, that leadership has been embodied by our current Board Chair, Michael Rapati, one of Denman’s most beloved personalities. Michael is nothing short of an icon here: someone who shows up for his neighbours, brings people together, and reflects the generosity and get-it-done spirit that defines our island. He is that calm presence you can count on, the person who seems to be everywhere at once when the community needs help, bringing encouragement, goodwill, and a joyful can-do attitude to every relationship and endeavour. Michael’s service as Chair has helped hold together a complex, multi-faceted arts ecosystem and has made a lasting contribution to Denman’s cultural life.
On behalf of the entire community, we offer deep appreciation for his leadership, mentorship, and heart. As Michael’s chapter as Chair comes to a close, Arts Denman begins a new one, and the Board is seeking a new Chair of the Board to carry the work forward.
What does the Chair do? The Chair serves as the elected leader of the Arts Denman Board, providing governance oversight and strategic direction; facilitating and nurturing strong relationships with partner organisations, funders, volunteers, and community members; presiding over Board meetings and supporting a healthy, effective governance culture; and working with the Board and volunteers to ensure that Arts Denman fulfils its mission to support arts and culture on Denman Island. The Chair is a connector, an ambassador, and a steward, someone whose leadership is anchored in community values, integrity, collaboration, and a passion for the arts.
