Community Arts

The Community Arts committee was created in 2022 with generous grants from The Arts Council of Canada and The BC Arts Council, to commission works of public art by artists who are members of the Denman community. The project is ongoing and are now working towards creating a sculpture park on the grounds of the Arts Centre where 4 commissioned sculptures currently reside.

The original series of commissioned works were:

• “Water Communities” A mural triptych on the east side of the Old School (Recycling Centre and Farmer’s Market) – by Leya Tess Anderson
• “Goodcheer Unltd” A windmill sculpture  on the grounds of the Old School – the artist wishes to remain anonymous
• “Leaping Salmon” A sculpture in metal – by Peter Karsten
• “The Hug” A wood sculpture on the grounds of the Arts Centre – by Richard Menard
• “Murmuration” A series of bird mobiles on the porch of the Arts Centre (seasonal) – by Jean Cockburn
• “Denman Flags” Flags representing life on Denman (seasonal) – by Jayne Fogarty
• “Herring Moon” A mural on the south side of the Activity Centre – by NYWN
• “Denman Tree of Life” A pottery sculpture hung on the south side of the Activity Centre- by Jeanie Rogers
• “Interwoven” A mixed media sculpture hung on a wall inside the Activity Centre lounge – by Mary Hicks
• “Herring Power” A metal sculpture on the exterior wall of the Museum – by Peter Karsten
• “At the Museum” A large painting on the exterior wall of the Museum – by Katarina Meglic

We have since added:

• “New Trauma Camouflage Suit” A metal figure sculpture in the field behind the Arts Centre – by Scot Bullick
• “Untitled” A large wood sculpture on the front lawn of the Arts Centre – by Michael Dennis
• Two untitled ceramic sculptures, one of a Cypriot goddess and the other of Pan – by Bentley LeBaron,  situated at the side of the Arts Centre close to Denman Rd.
